Energy upgrades, simplified

Cheaper Home Batteries Program

The program is backed by a multi-billion dollar federal fund and is expected to support up to around 1 million homes over its life to 2030.

Understanding Australia’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program

A Simple Guide to What It Is and How It Helps

Battery storage used to be something only a few households could afford. That is changing.

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a national initiative that gives households, small businesses and community organisations a serious discount on the cost of installing a battery system that works with rooftop solar. The aim is to help more Australians store their own solar power and use it when it really counts, instead of buying expensive electricity from the grid.

The program is backed by a multi-billion dollar federal fund and is expected to support up to around 1 million homes over its life to 2030.

What the Cheaper Home Batteries Program Is Trying to Do

Australia has millions of rooftop solar systems, but only a small share of homes have batteries. Before this program, a typical battery could add many thousands of dollars to a solar quote, which put storage out of reach for most families.

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is designed to:

  • Cut the upfront cost of eligible home and small business battery systems by around thirty per cent
  • Help households store their daytime solar and use it in the evening
  • Reduce pressure on the grid at peak times by smoothing out demand
  • Support the long-term shift to cleaner energy across Australia

In short, it rewards you for installing a battery that works with rooftop solar and uses that stored energy instead of drawing from the grid.

Am I eligible?

Residents

Who Can Benefit

The program is national. It is not limited to any one state or territory.

The customer must be one of the following:
  • Homeowners who already have rooftop solar
  • Homeowners installing solar and a battery together
  • Small businesses with solar on site
  • Some community organisations that meet the criteria
AND install:
  • An eligible battery system that has a nominal capacity between 5-50 kwh.

Other Important Eligibility Rules

Other Important Eligibility Rules Government guidance also spells out several practical rules that good installers copy onto their info pages:

  • One supported battery system per premises for this program, though owners with multiple properties may claim on each separately
  • The battery must be connected to a new or existing rooftop solar PV system and configured correctly
  • The system and all major components must appear on approved product lists, such as the Clean Energy Council lists
  • The installer must hold the right battery installation accreditation and must certify the system as capable of storing or discharging from 1 July 2025 onward to be eligible
The program also has a finite budget and a planned step-down in support each year until 2030, so earlier adopters generally receive higher rebates than those who wait.

What This Program Means for a Typical Household

For many households, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program is the difference between “maybe one
day” and “we can actually do this now”

With a compliant battery system and rooftop solar, the program can:

Got a question? We have answers!

Is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program a cash rebate I claim myself?

No. The discount is built into the price by accredited retailers and installers. It is delivered through certificates and program rules handled on the back end, not as a separate cheque or transfer.

Does everyone get exactly 30 percent off?

No. Thirty per cent is an approximate figure. The actual discount depends on your battery’s usable capacity, certificate values at the time of quoting and how your installer structures the system.

What battery sizes are supported?

The program supports battery systems between 5-50 kwh of nominal capacity.

Can I add a battery to an existing solar system?

Yes. Many households will add batteries to the solar system they already have, as long as the existing solar system and the new battery meet the program rules and are installed by an accredited installer.

Can I upgrade or replace a battery and still get support?

You may be able to, but only if the original battery did not already receive support under this program and the new total capacity meets the size and eligibility rules.

How long will the Cheaper Home Batteries Program run?

The program is planned to run with gradually reducing support through to around 2030. The discount rate is reviewed at least once a year and is expected to decline over time. So, the best time to get it is as early as possible to maximise your rebate.

Can landlords or owners of multiple properties access the program?

Yes. The rules allow one eligible battery system per premises. Owners of multiple properties may claim on each separate address that meets the conditions.
